The SME sector is underinvested but has great potential

 Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), defined as businesses with fewer than 250 employees, represent over 99% of all employers in the UK, totalling approximately 1.4 million. These enterprises account for more than half of UK employment and generate over £1.8 trillion in turnover.  

Despite their significant contribution to the economy, SMEs often struggle to secure the investment necessary for growth. In 2023, SMEs received less than 4% of private equity investment in the UK, with only 1% securing equity investment that year. This stark underinvestment highlights a substantial opportunity for investors.
